2011 Macbook has a circle w/ slash through it on opening screen how do I fix it?

My old 2011 Macbook has a circle with a slash through it on the opening screen...and I can't get anything else. Any advice on how to actually get on and hopefully recover some things. The last time I used it, it wasn't like that but was almost out of space. Advice???
