iPad not recognized in Windows 7 Ultimate

Good Morning,

Last week, I received an iPad 32GB WiFi as a gift. At this time I was running Vista Ultimate 64 on my home system. When I unboxed the iPad I read the instructions and installed iTunes 64-bit 9.2.1 on my Vista system. I connected the iPad and it was detected and iTunes launched. I registered the device and then it downloaded the OS update and successfully updated it to 3.2.2

I also received Windows 7 Ultimate and wiped my system and installed it. All the drivers are loaded from my hardware vendors (chipset, video, sound, etc). I know USB functions as I am able to plug in digital cameras, my passport drives, etc. and they are all detected and work fine.

I installed iTunes 64-bit 9.2.1 again. I logged into iTunes with my user account and that works fine. However, now when I connect my iPad to my system, I get Windows pop up messages telling me the device is not recognized and the driver could not be installed.

I opened device manager and after several unplug/replugs of the iPad, half the time I see "Unknown Device" and once I saw "Apple Mobile Device" with a yellow !.

I found Apple's KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538

I followed the instructions by uninstalling the "Unknown Device" and scanning for new hardware. It detects Unknown Device again. I then right clicked on Unknown Device and chose to update driver and navigated to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Drivers and trying to update the driver to use the Apple Mobile Device Driver but I get warnings and errors during this process. The warning tells me it isn't a compatible driver with the device and asks if I want to install it anyway. I chose yes. It installs but then it gives me an error telling me the device cannot start.

I don't know what is wrong. Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for the help.

Well I just tried something different and I got it working. I have USB ports on my 24" LCD monitor and plugged the cable into one of these ports and now the device works.

However, none of the USB ports work on my system. Yet other devices work on these ports. I do have a USB cable connector running from my monitor to a USB port on the back of my PC. Not sure why this works but all the USB ports on the front of my system (4 of them) don't work.

I am beginning to dislike the iPad experience. I have a 64GB 3G iPad that all of a sudden will not be recognized by Win 7 Premium. I just reinstalled Win 7 to make sure the OS was correct. I am using the original cable from Apple. I have tried disconnecting devices to see if there is a conflict. I keep getting the warning the installation of the iPad drivers has failed. ***?

I tried deleting and reinstalling based on the mentioned support number mentioned at the beginning of this post.

Right now I feel like giving the thing back to Apple.
Where can I get a complete folder with the necessary Apple USB drivers for this PC which has a Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P main board?

I can sit here with it plugged in an I can tell Windows is trying to contact it an install drivers, Win fails and then retries a few minutes later all over again.

WOW with the help from Apple's Web Site I figured it out.
This URL was very helpful

I disabled 'Online Armour' then
and this one even more so...

I found out that there is a whole raft of Apple software packages that are interrelated, they needed to be uninstalled in a certain order with the broswer closed.

In some rare instances, it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

1. iTunes
2. QuickTime
3. Apple Software Update
4. Apple Mobile Device Support
5. Bonjour
6. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

After they were all uninstalled I restarted windows to make sure the registery was updated properly.

Then all you have to do is reinstall iTunes which will add all of the above back all over again in the proper order.

Then I had to go into Win 7 SERVICES and STOP the new Apple Mobile Service and then restart it again so it would take effect.

Started iTunes, plugged in the iPad and every thing began working as expected.

Thanks Apple.

I just started to have this problem and I think it has something to do with a recent Windows 7 update. Has anyone else figured out how to fix this? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but no luck. iTunes recognizes my iPod just fine, but when I plug in my iPad, nothing happens--it's as if it's not being sensed by my PC (a Dell m4400 notebbok).

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thank You 4phun!

I researched this issue for over a day and had tried uninstalling than re-installing just itunes many times becuase all other sites were only mentioning the itunes piece of it. After reading your post where you list all of the apple softwares to uninstall and reassured me that re-installing itunes would re-install all of these other pieces as well I have tried this and it worked! You have saved me from a lot of grief becuase I thought I had a bad Ipad.
