10.1.1 Did not solve problem of battery drain on Apple Watch

Waited a few days before updating and decided to chance it this morning. My watch battery promptly dropped by 4% in about two minutes when it is normally down only about 15% after a few hours (with “always on” turned off). I had originally fixed the battery drain from WatchOS 10.1 by deleting MobyFace, so I went ahead today and deleted the remaining three (only had three!) 3rd party apps from my watch (Starbucks, Shazam, and Sky Guide). I restarted my watch after deleting the apps. Battery seems to be back to normal again since it has now been holding at 95% for the last hour after the initial post-update battery drain. I am very disappointed with Apple right now. I’ve only had my series 8 since August 2023, so it should still be good as new (it IS new!). I don’t think I will ever buy another Apple Watch once this one is done. I was hoping to have this one for at least a few years yet… we’ll see what happens with all these ridiculous updates! I’m certainly not updating my watch next time since those updates seem to work like a self destruct button. :(

10.1.1 has been a disaster for me too on my Series 5 and I had no battery probs before this update. I’m now having to charge twice a day. I used to have 50-60% battery in the morning, now I have 20%. I’ve no third party apps either 😳 Apple please fix this.

I’ve got a series 5 and after the update, just wasn’t prepared to put up with it. On another forum somebody said they downloaded the b*t* update ( Apple deleted my reply where I mentioned this, so I’m abbreviating in the hope people will know what I’m referring to, I’ve no idea why they deleted my response and they may delete this too). It has worked for me I’m pleased say and there appears to be no issues. My battery is the best it’s ever been to be honest, which is amazing. I’m not saying it will work for everyone as we all have different series, but it may be worth the risk if you are suffering.

Exactly my problem. On my Series 9 I turned everything off, AO display off, rise to wake off, sensors except hearth rate off, background app refresh 90% off (weather / world clock are off); weather location is only for while using the app on fixed city (not on my location to avoid location refreshes), notifications are only from some apps and I don’t receive a lot of them, the only 3’rd party apps are sound hound, Google maps and spotify… And still battery drains at 5-7%/hour with almost not using the watch… This is ridiculous….. I am seriously disappointed… Was expecting to have better battery life with basically every battery lasting setting applied… 🙁

The update could take weeks yet. There is a possible ‘fix’ please see my update above, it has sorted out the update ‘bug’ for me. I’m not saying it’s going to work for everyone, but it’s a risk worth taking perhaps. Everything works perfectly now I’m pleased to say it is better than it ever was. I can’t repeat it again here, in case Apple delete it as they don’t like it being mentioned for some reason (even though it’s their own update that can fix this issue). Note: It takes a while to download.

The b*t* is not a fix. What worked for me was: AO display off, rise to wake off, most background refresh off (you don’t need most apps to constantly refresh in the background btw and make sure Weather / World clock are off), Weather location must also be set from always (on phone settings) to while using app/widgets, also if you receive tons of notifications make some changes there as well. Also if there are 3’rd party apps there can be issues with them like the case with MobyFox /Mobyface… I also disabled spo2 for max battery output. Aldo try a restart pressing the crown + side button until Apple logo appears. This helped my battery a lot. The most drainage was from weather/world clock (also compass can drain battery if it’s on always on background refresh). Hope this helps until Apple fixes battery drain issues.

I’m glad what you have done has worked for you. It sounds like your battery is fairing better because you’ve deleted and disabled so much and ideally you shouldn’t have had to do that. It’s not really a ‘fix’ as such, what you have done, but if it gets you longer on your battery that is good, but as has been said, it is not a battery issue, it’s a bug.

I wanted just to add, I also did a forced restart after the b*t* update ( rather than use the slider to switch off) I have no idea if this made a difference as it might not have needed it, but lots of sites etc generally advise doing this now and then. It’s worth doing that too if anyone is trying the above update in a bid to ‘fix’ this.

Having this same issue after upgrading to 10.1.1 on my Apple Watch Ultra 2. I started noticing something amiss when I was getting 10% battery warning messages around 5-6pm. This had never occurred on this watch with previous iOS versions. I checked battery health and charging capacity which were 100%, so I am assuming there is something tragically flawed with this hurried release of iOS 10.1.1. After tracking my battery life results in Excel, it would seem the battery is discharging at a rate 40% faster than it previously was, before the update. This is extremely frustrating, as it renders an "explorer" level watch basically useless. What good are GPS, workout, and health functions if my battery cannot even last half a day? Apple should be embarrassed for allowing this software to pass the final phase gate and QC sign off. Seems like in the last ten years alone, software updates have become increasingly buggy and half-baked.

This may be helpful to some if the latest 10.2 update doesn't fix the issue. The walkie-talkie app on my watch had been enabled either accidentally or as I read elsewhere, some users found it had been enabled during a software update. No idea which one happened in my case, but tapping it in control center if it is yellow will disable it. I am noticing a substantial improvement in battery life since doing this. I will confirm after several days whether it is completely resolved in my case. Currently running the latest 10.2 update.

The only thing that worked for me was a factory reset, setting up as “new,” and then not allowing anything but the pre-installed apps. After a couple days, battery life restored. (Donned my 6 at 7am. As of 1pm it’s at 89%.)

After a few days of good battery life I’ve only reinstalled my mission critical apps and complications.

It would be nice if Apple got off their butts and fixed it for real so we could use these watches as we like.

My Apple Watch Ultra 2 was doing okay until 10.2 (release version) was installed.

Now it is like a cliff. Battery drains very, very quickly.

Not sure what the problem is. I have tried turning off double tap and disabling notifications from Walkie Talkie (two suggestions from the community elsewhere).

I have also generally deleted any even slightly unnecessary apps and reduced notifications and background processing.

Is there any way to see Apple Watch battery usage by app? That might at least give me some clue.
