Reached end of life

I've got a 27" mid-2017 iMac (model 18,3) that I really like, especially the retina display. It's running macOS 13.6.1. It won't update to 13.6.2. or to Sonoma. I don't really care being stuck with this OS, except for security updates. Does apple typically push security updates to their older OS machines? If there is no added security risk then no reason to buy new hardware.

Both Monterey 12 and Ventura 13 are currently being supported by security updates.

Monterey could be dropped after the next major macOS release, but you should be fine running Ventura for a couple of years.

I believe that as a rule, Apple

  • Only pushes out new features to the current version of macOS
  • Only releases security patches for the most recent three versions of macOS

That doesn't necessarily mean that Monterey and Ventura will get every security patch that Sonoma does. But it means that if getting security patches is important to you, you now want to be running Monterey or better.

Your machine can run Ventura, which shouldn't drop out of the "most recent three" for another couple of years.

Hey there!

While macOS Ventura is the most recent version of macOS compatible with your Mac, as others have mentioned, macOS Ventura is still receiving security updates.

However, if you are looking to upgrade to a new Mac to run the latest version of macOS, then I'd suggest looking at either a Mac mini or Mac Studio paired with a Studio Display. This configuration will give you a powerful, Apple silicon Mac with the 27-inch 5K display you love with your iMac.

Thanks Jack. I was considering exactly what you suggested, mini with Studio. However I choked on the price. The $800 mini is plenty of horsepower. And the studio is a great piece of hardware, however at $1600 its a but rich. I've been looking at 4K displays, 27" or even bigger, for a lot less money. My wife's 4.5K iMac is nice but I really like the extra real estate. So I'll jut keep looking for a while longer.
