How to Set-Up a New iPhone When the Old iPhone is Dead

I'm here on behalf of my wife who has a 1st generation SE that won't start-up due to a dead battery. We have a new SE (2nd generation), but without access to her old phone we won't be able to transfer data to her new phone or access her apple ID account (due to Two-Factor Authentication). Her dead iPhone is the only device on the apple ID account. Here's my question:

  • With the SIM card from the old iPhone installed in the new iPhone, will she be asked during set-up to log-in to her apple ID account that's associated with the old iPhone? Or will she be asked to create a new apple ID account? Or, can she log-in with an apple ID that's associated with a different device (e.g. her laptop)?

Thank you!

If her phone number has not changed she will be able to use the new phone to verify 2 factor authentication. However, the only way to get data off the dead phone is to restore a backup she made before the phone died.

Can the old phone be used if it is plugged in? Most phones with a dead battery will still work if plugged in; if heres does then she can transfer data from it.

This leads to two suggestions:

  1. Log in to https://appleid.apple.com and add other trusted numbers to her security settings (perhaps your phone number, or a landline)
  2. Start a regular schedule of backups. Ideally, go to Settings/[her apple ID name]/iCloud and turn on iCloud Backup, then plug in the phone overnight, every night, and it will back up automatically every night.

Did your wife use iCloud to backup her now dead iPhone? If she did, as long as the phone she wants to move to is ready for a new user and opens to the Hello page, she would sign into the new phone using her Apple ID and it will offer the opportunity to set it up from an iCloud backup.

Is the iPhone she will be moving to opening to the Hello page? It needs to be prepared appropriately for a new user and this is how that would be done --> What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Then see this link about setting up the phone once it's fully prepared and choose iCloud --> Transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Same number with same carrier. Yea, I understand about the data. Even plugged-in the only activity on the screen is the battery icon glowing with a red bar at the bottom. Unfortunately, I don't know to what extent she backed-up. But the good news is I don't think she had much to back-up anyway. So for now I'm just prep'ing to get the phone set-up with phone service ON. She can populate from there manually if necessary. I'll follow through on your suggestions...thanks!!!!

I should have mentioned that your initial comment about being "able to use the new phone to verify 2 factor authentication" is what I was looking to understand. That being that the new phone will behave like the old phone, as far as phone service and being able to log-in using the apple ID that's associated with her old phone. Correct?

Thanks for the helpful comments. Knowing that the new phone will allow 2 factor is what I was looking to clarify. Unfortunately, the old phone is really dead. Plugged in for days, and even when still plugged in not enough juice to launch. I was initially thinking of sending in to have the battery replaced, but then considered that there might be other issues so opted for a new (old) phone instead. I'll check your suggestions...thanks!
