Lost iPhone at Heathrow Airport. Uncomfortable with information requested by Heathrow to recover phone. Afraid they will be able to obtain additional info regarding banking, etc.
In addition to other info, they want proof of ownership, serial and IMEI numbers. Is it safe to provide this info? How can they compare numbers I send to numbers in my lost phone when it is password protected?

Serial and IMEI will not give access to your data, particularly if you are sure this is genuinely Heathrow asking for it.

Using another device sign into https://icloud.com/find (keep your password secret) and erase the device. Do not remove it from your account!

If local law enforcement requests the information, I recommend providing it in written form and obtaining a receipt for your records.
Thank you. I still don’t understand why they want the numbers when there isn’t any way to check them against my password protected phone. I could create serial and IMEI numbers and they probably wouldn’t know the difference. (I’m not doing that) Trying to be cautious and probably overthinking the situation.

I was finally able to interact with them via email. They requested additional information that I provided. At the same time, I asked why they need serial and IMEI numbers.
