AirDrop files not appearing in Downloads folder

I have been having a problem when sending a file via AirDrop to my iMac (whether from my iPhone, iPad or wife's devices) and although the Downloads icon would bounce as if it received the file, it was nowhere to be found. Has anyone found a solution to this?

UPDATE: It appears (and I have no idea why) that the AirDropped files are going into my iCloud Downloads folder. I haven't dug in deep to see if this is a setting I can change but that appears to be what is happening. Hope this helps someone.
