I have plugged my iphone in to the power but am unable to access settings to tell it to back up to there cloud, rather I have to wait till it does an auto backup. As I need to book a time to replace the phone, and ASAP, how long will the auto backup take please?

If the phone has been damaged, backups are not going to occur, no matter whether they might have been "automatic" or "manual" in the past.
Hopefully, you have a recent backup that can be used to restore data back to the phone after it has been repaired.

Bob Timmons is correct. Your smashed iPhone is not going to backup, at all. The time to ensure no loss of data is before catastrophe strikes. If you haven't been backing the iPhone up, your data is going to be gone. If you have, you'll be able to restore your backup to the new iPhone you'll surely need to buy.
Can you check iTunes and see if there’s an option to back it up there?
