Freeform does not seem to have handwriting conversion to text like Notes does

Running iPadOS 17.1.1 with Apple Pencil 2. If I have handwritten text in Notes, I can double-tap that and it is recognized as text. I can convert it to text by "Copy as Text".

If I try the same thing in Freeform it has no idea that it is text and will not provide a "Copy as Text" option (see below). I can select it with the lasso tool, but finger-tapping on the text does nothing. Scribble works just fine - if I use the text pen I can write in text fields, but Freeform seems to have been neglected concerning handwriting conversion if I am correct?
