smart album multiple keywords

Using photos 9.0 with a library on an external ssd (it is a large library I don't want mixed with my photos on my map hard drive). when trying to use smart album to find multiple keywords, it will not show the photos. For example I am trying to find joe and lottie in .jpeg. I select match any of the following, keyword is joe, filename contains jpeg and it shows all 8 photos. if I add another criteria, keyword is lottie, it only shows 1 photo of lottie (and there are actually 7 of them). If I change to match all of the following, it will list all of the jpegs regardless of the tag. This is pretty frustrating, Can it not do this??? It seems counter intuitive to have to make another smart album for the second person (keyword).

Do you want to find photos showing Joe and Lotti together or or photos of either Joe or Lotti?

It is not possible to use a combination of "Match All" and "Match any" in one smart album, like we could do in smart playlists in iTunes. The smart albums in Photos are more limited. We can only use "Match All" or "Match Any", but not combine them.

So you should be able to find all JPEGs with Joe and Lotti together in one picture with "Match all", or all photos that are either a jpeg or show lotto or show Joe with "match any", but you cannot set up a smart album combining all JPEG with either Lotti or Joe in one albums.

Is it essential to test for "JPEG" in the same smart album? If not, try a smart album with "Match any" to combine all photos of Lotti and Joe in one album, then use the "Showing only" filter to restrict the result to Photos or additional keywords. The "Showing" filter is our only chance to restrict the results of a smart album further and to combine a "Match any" layer with a kind of "Match all".

I'm not sure exactly what you're doing. Have you entered the keywords "joe" and "lottie" into the keyword field in the info window on each picture? When you look at a picture with both joe and lottie, do you see both words in the keyword section of the info window? When you open the keyword manager, ⌘-k, do you see the keywords for joe and lottie?

Have you tagged the faces of joe and lottie? That is, when you look at a picture of joe, and you check View>Show Face Names, is joe labeled with the name "joe" in the picture? This face tagging is separate from keywords and, if they are face-tagged, then you can use "Person" "includes" "joe" in the smart album. Does that work?

Can you let us know exactly what you are doing, and how it isn't working?
