Time Machine set up fail: "unable to prepare the disc" "Name invalid"

Hello,

I am replacing a full SSD for Time Machine on an Intel iMac (Ventura).

When I try to "Add backup Disc" in Time Machine I get this error message:

"Time Machine was unable to prepare the disc." "Name invalid"

I've erased and formatted the new SSD to APFS encrypted, and then again as APFS unencrypted with the

same error message resulting.

Any ideas?

Apple support chat helped fix this.

Disc utilities > First Aid > Run - (Failed > repeat = success ) but same error message in TM setup

Changing the name of volume and password in disc utilities didn't help

but changing the name on the whole SSD seemed to fix it. Don't know why
