In previous versions of Mac OS, it was possible to make a link on the desktop (or anywhere else) to a URL. It was easy, click and drag the URL from Safari onto the desktop. Release the mouse and viola, a shortcut to the URL on the desktop.
Now in Ventura, the same mouse movement simply opens a new Safari window.
Does anyone know how to create a link to a URL on the Desktop in Mac OS Ventura?
I found a different way. Open Safari tab. Open Finder and navigate to where you want to store the URL. Hover over Safari's top left green dot to tile Safari window to the left. Click on Finder and it automatically opens its window to the right. Now both Safari and Finder are on the screen. Click on the Safari URL text; it's highlighted. Then click/drag the URL to the selected place in Finder.

As further info.....If you are using Safari with multiple tabs open and want to create a shortcut to one of those, first click on that tab, then press the option key to change the (x) to the apple symbol ()then drag it to the desktop. That will create a URL shortcut called .webloc.

FWIW, seeing I couldn't your description to work in any version of Safari running any version of macOS going back to Big Sur, I just thought I would point out that clicking and dragging the icon to the left of the address in the URL field of just about any browser to the Desktop, Dock or a folder, will create a .webloc file
FWIW, it still works the same way. To me, it sounds like you are grabbing a tab and dragging, which would create a new window of that tab.
Oh my.....another snafu.....it's not the option key..... it’s the command key. Sorry for the bad advise I gave originally.

I've not seen it documented. I discovered it accidentally one day. I just now tried it and it worked for me. You have to hover the mouse cursor over the (x). I inadvertently missed that step. Using Sonoma 14.1.1 and Safari 17.1
FWIW, that doesn't seem to work for me in Sonoma. Is that documented somewhere?
No problem. I no longer have Safari 17.1 on anything so I can't really check.
Curious. How is that possible? If you are using Ventura or Sonoma, isn't the packaged version of Safari 17.1?

Yes. It's possible because I'm testing.
FWIW, I just checked the g/f's iMac running Ventura 13.6.1 with Safari 17.1 and it doesn't work there either. Beats me.
Holding the command key and hovering over the x (which then turns into apple) works! Thanks guys
Glad it works for you. Now I just have to figure out why it doesn't work for me on four different Macs. 😎
