Can a iMAC 11,2 be upgraded? Last OS update is Sierra and is unable to update!

Noticed that computer no longer performs automatic updates and discovered its incompatible with latest updates to OS and APPs. What would be the cost to upgrade?

iMac 21.5″, macOS 10.12

Back up your data, check the application compatibility table, click here, and then on the download link for High Sierra. This upgrade is free but the last one for that model; going further would require paying the cost of a newer Mac.

rkaufmann87: The iMac11,2 descriptor identifies the model year, and Sierra is never the last OS for a model.

Please look up the model year by clicking the Apple symbol in the upper left of the display. Then refer to the following Apple World article:

If you have reached the latest version of Mac OS your iMac will support and want (or need) to run later versions of Mac OS then it is time to replace your current iMac. No, they cannot be upgraded to run later versions of Mac OS due to hardware limitations.

One tricky part is when you purchase a new machine be certain you can use your software. When this happened to me, I was told that all of the software I used would no longer be compatible. I ended up choosing to purchase a new iMac with Sonoma OS, and also keeping the old 2009 iMac to run Adobe CS6, which I owned because it ran perfectly on the old machine. This solution works for me, but might not work at all for someone else.
