Audio Jack doesn't export sound for wired headsets, but allows microphone input

I have MBP M1 14" 16gb RAM 1TB currently running Monterey 12.5.1 (I haven't upgraded to Sonoma as there's been a lot of issues with trackpad/mouse sensitivity, spotlight, folder manipulation, etc).

The speakers and microphone native to the laptop are fine.

If I'm plugged in with my head set a Sennheiser SC 635, or Skullcandy or Sony ear buds I can use the microphone to record on Zoom but there's no audio output.

I've checked the audio jack, and there's no physical debris in the port.

Any thoughts?

PS Also the bluetooth signal is distorted and tinny on both the original UE Boom and the new Anker Sound Mini.

Something's buggy with the sound.

Have you looked at the Audio MIDI Setup.app in your Utilities folder?

Maybe there is something there...
