for the past week, I can't edit or create any of my office documents. After a few rounds of troubleshooting with Microsoft, they concluded that probably Sonoma ver14 is not compatible with my MS Office 2019. they advised me to downgrade to the OS (Monterey) when I first installed the Office 2019 app.
Has anyone encountered the same issue? Just wondering if there are any risks if I downgrade the MacOS...

I had the same issue for few days. Today I finally solve it. I have MS 2019 Excel, Word, OneNote and Powerpoint on v 16.78 installed and Sonoma 14.1.1 and I was finally able to activate it.
For me there was no need to go back in Time Machine.

Maybe, you should upgrade to Office apps 2021. They also were there in Ventura, by the way.
Maybe you have to install the 2021 version of the Office. Because it did work on macOS Sonoma.
Microsoft also shut off your Office 2019 updates as they retired the product on Oct 10.
Thank you all for the replies. As my Office 2019 is still okay and suits my current needs, I'm thinking to downgrade the MacOS. BUT worried about the risk and implications.
We saw something similar but it turned out that we had to re-register Office. (Under the Microsoft Word menu.)

I can't believe the option is to go back to a previous version. that is unfeasible!
As it is a problem with MS Office 2019, don't you think you should raise that question with Microsoft, rather than here?

in the end, I succumbed to pressure and subscribed to ms365 ;( as i couldn't risk any more glitches while working on my dissertation....
I have upgraded to OSX Sonoma 14.1.2 and my MS Office for Mac 2019 (Perpetual License) works absolutely fine. No issues whatsoever.
