Is the data encrypted on non-Apple applications downloaded from the Apple App Store?

I purchased an iPhone recently, because I heard that all the data going out and coming to my iPhone was encrypted.

I also recently heard (from an apple support representative) that only the data from Apple apps were encrypted, but if you have other (non-apple) applications that use data downloaded from the Apple App Store on your iPhone are NOT encrypted data coming to and from your iPhone.

I would not generally characterize data sent by all third-party apps as non-encrypted. Each developer implements it or not depending on the required level of security. For example, banks who care encrypt their data end-to-end (check with your institution) but an online Scrabble™ game may not. Many apps do not store or exchange data externally so there is no need to implement encryption.

If you're concerned about a particular app contact its developer to find out.
