How to stop other peoples contact photo from auto updating on my phone

How do I stop other peoples contact photo and poster from auto updating on my phone through messages? I like having just the 2 initials showing for everyone unless i want to add my own photo or emoji to them.

Example: I was just texting someone "John Doe" contact photo was "JD" monogram in grey then automatically their contact photo updated to some real picture of them. So i have to go and edit their contact back to plain text.

How do I block this from happening ?

iPhone 15

IOS 17.1.1

Thank you.

No pictures were sent over messages. Their contact photo just updated without asking

Where the red arrow is.

it turned into their emoji that they set on their side. Which I had to go edit and turn back into letters “EK”

and now it’s is also wanting me to update the contact name which I don’t want to.

How to stop this?

Typically, iMessage doesn't automatically update or synchronize contact photos based on the images shared within conversations. In other words, even if someone sends you pictures through iMessage, those images won't automatically become the contact photo for that person in your contacts list. The contact photo usually needs to be manually updated or changed on your device to reflect any preferred images you might want to associate with specific contacts.
