"Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" Anyone seen this with Sonoma 14.1.1?

"Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" Anyone seen this with Sonoma 14.1.1?

It was earlier, "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode." After a few restarts, and a few times of battery usage, it changed to this, "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" and the macOS/MBP will automatically charge to 100% at the given time, or a few minutes before that time. The info "Scheduled to finish charging by 14:30" came ~ 19:00 yesterday. So, ~ 14:00 today, the battery will be charged to 100%. Even though, it says 100%, it'd be less than that, ~97% according to Coconutbattery app. It is 76.6%, rather than 80% now.

what do you think about this?

Normal

About Optimized Battery Charging

The CoconutBattery application is only reading from Sensors built into the computer. The same Sensor the Operating System is reading and report

The differences I have found, is that there is always gap between the more real Numbers ( CoconutBattery) and what is presented by the Operating System.

Have found , over many years of using CoconutBattery, there seems to some type of Reserved Value ranging from 2 % - 4 % difference in reported Charge of the battery .

Below illustration is from an Older Intel Machine which has since been traded in for the M2 Model

Thanks, I know that. Sometimes, I check in the Terminal too.

The question is, if you've noticed this "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" line in System Settings > Battery?

The "Charging on Hold (Rarely used on Battery)" is not showing for sometime. Or, the "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode" in the System Settings > Battery. Could be a new algorithm.

By the way, the Full Charge Capacity of the battery is getting better with Sonoma 14.1.1, rising to an additional ~2.5% than it was.

It looks like everything is back to normal. It is "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode" with battery charge at 80% now.

At about 13:20, while the battery charge at 90%, it changed in to, "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode." I couldn't take a screenshot then, but took one a bit later, when it was 89%.

I had to go away, so put the MBP to sleep. When I came back a few minutes ago, it was like this, battery level slowly going down.

Later, it went down to 80% and is staying there.

So, back again in the "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode."

It was interesting to have that intermediate stage, "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging", before coming back to the Desktop Mode. 👌

Well, too early to be overjoyed(?) on getting back the Desktop Mode, yet. In the morning, it was back again "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" with a notice that the battery will be charged to full by 16:00 today.

Could be a new way of optimised charging, and/or a new algorithm in Sonoma 14.1.1. Have to check how long will it stay at (official) 100%, and when will it again go back to 80% and/or will it stay at the Desktop Mode longer. The FCC had gotten better, so nothing to worry about (yet). It'll be interesting see how it goes.

Hum, this appears to some unique feature to MBP the within Sonoma >> System Setting Sonoma >> Battery Category

Not seeing anything remotely on a M2 MBA is the same location

Pardon my ignorance and I do mean ignorance

Desktop Mode

Have seen this mentioned a few time elsewhere but have no idea what it is.

Yes, Game Mode I know of but Desktop Mode - no.

Teach this" old dog " a new trick if you would

No

Do not use Desktop Mode so - No

Could be and at the same time, have found over the years that the Apple " algorithm " is sometimes a " Slow Learner "

It has occurred where the " algorithm " took up to 6 Months ( not a typo error ) to learn, thus the Slower Learner designation

On personal note, keep on doing the good work on these Forums 👍

My MBP is always plugged in. Rarely used on battery, only sometimes, just to check how the MBP is faring on battery. It fares quite well, even after 4 1/2 years. The battery usage is practically the same as promised for a new device 4 1/2 years ago, just about 30 minute less.

Since the last few restarts, as written in the OP, the earlier "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode" had changed to "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" and at the same time the FCC had gone up. So, whatever it is, it is doing alright. In a few weeks, I'll run the MBP on battery again, just to check. The Reminder app will let me know when. 👌

I had few weeks of "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode" with the battery level at 80%, until I used it on battery for 7 hours last time (few restarts later). Earlier I had few times of few weeks on that "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode." Lately, this "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging" came through, and with that the battery level stays at 100%, sometimes going down a bit and returning to 100%, yesterday, for few hours, it went to the "Charging on Hold: Desktop Mode" and back again to "Charging on Hold: Optimised Battery Charging."

I'll be observing this situation, as it is quite interesting. I know that, it'd never reach 100%, even if the top bar would show that, it'd be ~ 97%. Of course, I'd be happy if it would stay at 80% as it was before, but as far as it won't use the battery much, electricity power bypassing the battery, and not damaging the battery, I am happy with it. I'll send a feedback to Apple anyway, even though Apple had moved away from Intel chips.
