Backspace highlights and deletes words

It's infuriating me... Backspace is now just a delete entire last word button. Absolutely idiotic

I’m having the same issue and it’s driving me nuts. So much so that I am online looking for a way to MAKE IT STOP! It sounds like others are having the same issue which makes me not feel alone. Hopefully, Apple will get enough complaints and fix this issue in the next update. It makes me want to scream!

This never used to happen. I use pages on my iPad all the time. I am currently writing a long document and I am going crazy. If I put a word in and there is an extra space, before a period for example, and I go back one space it deletes the entire word. I’m losing my mind and it is costing me so much time.

I’m also very frustrated by this and wish Apple would fix it. It wastes a lot of time and breaks my concentration when I’m writing.

I am also having this problem, primarily when writing in Pages on my phone. It’s very frustrating. I found that going into settings/general/keyboards and then turning off auto-correction, seems to stop it. But it’s a trade off because I could really use autocorrection too.

Yes, I’m having this same extremely annoying issue. Come on Apple, how do we revert to settings we are used to? I’ve searched widely and can’t find any way of changing the relevant settings. This seems to be a new issue with the latest update to iPages for iPhones and iPads.

There is definitely a difference, and it arrived in December with an update. Deleting entire words when backspacing to add, for example, punctuation, never used to happen. I’ve been using Pages for iPad for about 10 years. Due to Parkinson’s disease my typing is becoming erratic, and more in need of correction, and this new feature is costing me a lot of time and patience!

Try turning off the "Delete Slide-to-Type by word" setting in the iPhone keyboard settings. Worked for me

Definitely different. For example, if you backspace once to remove the last auto-space in a sentence in order to end the sentence with a full-stop, it deletes the last word at the same time as typing a full-stop. The solution in that case is to double space forwards, which auto creates a full stop without deleting the last word, but old habits die hard.

the only way i've been able to curb this annoying feature WITHOUT disabling autocorrect has been to hit the right arrow key immediately after it highlights (ex. if the word is highlighted and i want to add a comma without having to retype the word or otherwise alter it, i hit the right arrow). unfortunate and irritating as this might be, it should suffice until apple gets their head together.

Driving me crazy too. Two things I've learned in this life. If it ain't broke don't fix it. And you can't fix stupid. It will be interesting to see what happens here. Getting really annoyed with updates that seem to set me back in terms of convenience and time. Makes me wonder if the people engineering this stuff even use an iPhone?!

Hasn't backspace always worked that way?

It backspaces until you come to the end of a word then it highlights the word and deletes with next backspace. Do you keep your finger on the backspace key? If yes, just tap it once for each backspace operation.

It maybe a bit more sensitive with the latest versions of devices/operating systems/apps.

FYI I've not noticed any difference in use of the backspace key, heavy Pages user.
