I recently upgraded to Big Sur on my old macbook pro. I want to add Messages and other things back to my menu bar (pops up at bottom of screen, as I want it to), but when I go to View>Toolbars>Customize Toolbar it is grayed out. How do I fix this to add things back to my menu/toolbar?

I believe you're actually wanting to add apps to the Dock.
In a nutshell, drag an app from the Applications folder into place on the Dock and release it. The icon will stay while the app returns to the Applications folder.

Yes I want to add Messages and other things back to my dock. I don't know where to find Messages on my Mac to drag it to the dock so, some other Help thing I read suggested using View>Toolbars>Customize... but the customize toolbar options are grayed out. I also found Messages under System Preferences>Extensions, but it's also grayed out.
and for toolbars, it's actually "app name" > View > Customize Toolbar.
EDIT: not all apps have customizable toolbars.
