A duplicate Mac HD Data drive is blocking Time Machine backup

MacBook Pro with OS 11.1 Big Sur

A Simple Goal: backup on Time Machine before upgrading to Sonoma

Time Machine gives me an error - can't complete the backup because:

"Two of the disks to back up have the same name. Rename one of the disks named “Macintosh HD - Data”.

Finder shows two drives :

  1. "Macintosh HD" - this contains my home folder, all applications and documents
  2. "Macintosh HD - Data" - this looks empty, until I show hidden files, and then it lists three folders
  • .fseventsd
  • .SpotlightV100
  • .Trashes

Disk Utility shows my Internal drives:

1--Macintosh HD

  • with the OS badge on the drive icon, com.apple.os.update underneath, Mount point = /

2--Macintosh HD - Data

  • with a house badge on the drive icon, 200GB+ Used, Mount point = /System/Volumes/Data

3--Macintosh HD - Data

  • with no badge on the drive icon, 840k Used, Mount point = /Volumes/Macintosh HD - Data

Questions:

  • Can I safely remove this third volume in Disk Utility? (Just using the minus button at top?)
  • If not, how do I complete the Time Machine backup so I can continue to system upgrade? I don't know what to drag into the 'Exclude' preference in Time Machine - when I click its plus button it only lets me select the "Macintosh HD" drive - one of the "Macintosh HD - Data" drives is visible but greyed out)
  • Not sure how this all happened in the first place, but is there something I should do to prevent it happening again when I upgrade to Sonoma?

Thanks !!

The ...- Data volume with the Home icon would be the genuine article with the proper mount point.

The other, without the badge, is likely an artifact of an errant upgrade. It happens. Deleting that volume as you wish via Disk Utility should not cause an issue.

There is no particular special preparation that need be done before upgrading your OS to prevent this. Just make sure you have up to date backups of your data before you do, in case something worse should happen.
