iCloud Drive - Where? and access?

I've read about iCloud Drive, but I want to check my understanding/assumptions ...

* When I turn on the "Desktop and Documents Folders:" option, those folders and their contents are removed from my Mac HD and put in the "iCloud Drive", which I can only access if I am online... No access to the internet means I can't access the documents at all. Is that correct?

  • If I just drag a copy of a folder (e.g. my Documents folder) to the iCloud Drive icon in my Finder's sidebar.... 1) That copy is stored on my local Mac HD, i.e. it uses local storage space. 2) And no auto syncing of additions/deletions happens between between my Documents folder and the copy in my iCloud Drive.

Thanks in Advance!

no. Your documents remain on your Mac and sync to iCloud.

  1. yes. Unless you optimize files and your device space is low when some files may offload to iCloud only.
  2. anything in iCloud Drive syncs. Anything outside does not (with the exception of desktop and documents if sync is turned on.

Thanks in Advance!
