MacBook Pro m2 8gb ram 256gb ssd vs MacBook Air m2 16gb ram 256gb ssd

Which of these MacBooks will be better for overall performance? Would the 16gb ram make Air better than Pro with 8gb or will the fans in Pro still make it perform better than Air ? Worth mentioning is both models are on sale now in my country with the Air being around $180 more expensive than the Pro model.

Wow! Tough choice.

I'm inclined to believe the Air with its 16GB RAM might edge out this MBP when you consider video editing.

But I gotta say, you might consider a little future-proofing before you buy. Neither of these machines with only 256GB internal storage seems a good starting point to me. In todays computer world, looking forward, I would consider nothing less than a Mac with a 512GB drive and 16GB RAM. Yes, you can add external storage later, but you cannot change the built-in configuration of the internal storage and RAM.

So, sorry to be a killjoy... but that's my $0.02 opinion.

Hi danni61,

Definitely get at least 16 GB of RAM no matter what Mac you choose to purchase. That will let you easily run multiple apps at once without slowing down or missing a beat, unlike 8 GB of RAM.

As D.I. Johnson mentioned, 256 GB isn't a lot of internal storage to have, especially considering that you can't upgrade it later on. You might want to check the Apple Refurbished Store to see whether there's any deals on Macs with higher storage capacity. Just make sure to change the store region at the bottom once you're in.

(All Apple Refurbished products are essentially new with a brand new exterior and verified-good internals.)

I agree 100% with the recommendations above to go with a larger SSD, and also agree completely that you'll want 16GB RAM.

Now, when you mention editing videos for a YouTube channel, I think it depends on how large those videos are. The larger the video, the harder your Mac will be working. If you combine that with the comment "...some work in Adobe programs..." I'm inclined to recommend the MacBook Pro M2, but with 16GB RAM and a larger SSD.

The MBA would be fine for occasional video and photo editing, but if you'll be doing a LOT of it, then I'd recommend going with the MBP.

While I realize any spec bumps cost $, they may well eliminate time spent watching the beach ball spin on your display.

Just my $0.02 worth.

For average consumers, I usually say choose storage over RAM but given this:

The laptop will be used for running e-com store with some work in Adobe programs, with the ambition to edit some videos for YouTube channel in the future

I think both are important. If there is way to make both happen, that is probaly best.

More than 256GB RAM remains super-important because we are already seeing reports here from people with 256GB storage and minimal app load who are having trouble updating their operating system versions due to lack of free space.
