Personal Voice trainer stopped working (MacOS 14.1.1 Sonoma)

After successfully creating one personal voice, I tried creating another. This time, when I reached the point where you click the Big Red Button and say "I'm creating a personal voice with my Mac", it appears to listen, and to notice when you've finished, and to reset the Big Red Button image to the original circular arrow, but then nothing. Previously it would either complain about high background noise, or proceed to recording the 150 sample sentences.

I've tried restarting the Mac, and I've tried creating a new user and building a personal voice there, and the result is the same.

Any ideas for a fix, short of reinstalling the OS?

The problem actually turned out to be simple: the sound input source was switched to "Transcriptions Text-to-Speech" and the trainer wasn't hearing anything at all. Its timeout corresponded roughly to when I'd finished speaking, giving me the impression that it knew I'd finished speaking. (Some kind of message to that effect would have been hugely useful.) More to the point, I noticed that Live Speech switches the sound input from built-in mic to Transcriptions text-to-speech while speaking, but sometimes fails to switch it back, which is what caused the situation in the first place. I have filed a bug report.
