iPad 2020 - out of storage to upgrade

We bought my mum an iPad 32Gb in 2020 which she uses mainly for FaceTime, Netflix and browsing and little else.

Lately she’s not been able to update it due to not having enough storage. She’s removed all extraneous apps, all her music and pictures and still only has 3.5Gb of space left.

Between iOS and System Data she has over 21Gb used up.

Is there a way of clearing out the System Data?

She went to the Apple Store and they told her to reset the whole device, update and then restore and if not, buy a new one. They did almost convince her to get one. They did say that she will have to factory reset each update.

Surely this can’t be true?

She’s mid-70’s and fairly tech savvy, but still struggling to get it to work. I live a bit of a distance and can’t get over to look, nor can we plug it into a computer.

It is generally recommended that you maintain 4-6GB of free space at all times - as your iPad needs some temporary space to complete some tasks - such as performing system software updates.

A system software update requires sufficient space to be downloaded, unpacked and verified prior to installation - major version updates (such as updating from iPadOS 16.x to iPadOS 17) requiring considerably more space than an incremental point-update. After the update is successfully completed, temporary files are automatically deleted - returning free space.

If your internal storage is full, or is insufficient for the task that you need to perform, your only option is to better manage the storage that you have - and delete unused Apps or unneeded data.

“Offloading” Apps can be a helpful method of creating temporary space for a software update.

External storage options can often help with managing limited internal storage. Depending upon your iPad model, the iPad will either have a Lightning or USB-C port - and may therefore require either an Adapter or USB hub to connect the USB Storage device. If your iPad has a Lightning port, you’ll need an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter:

Buying any iPad with only a paltry 32 GB of storage is not a good idea since there will not be any space for any downloads. The Appllem store suggestion means that she will only have on it what it came with, update it, and then bring back her content.

She needs to move all photos, videos, etc to an external drive or get an iPad with a minimum of 128 or 256 GB of space. She can't do much with system storage - that is taken care of by the system and will shrink if you reset it. Tough choices when you have very litte space to begin with
