Trying to add a custom label to a contact's phone number. The provided instructions do not work as listed:
Tap "Custom" at the bottom of list of labels
Type in the custom label you want to use and tap "Done"
Tap "Done" again to save your changes.

Open contacts, choose a contact, tap Edit, scroll down to the phone numbers, tap + add phone, tap the blue word defining what phone number is like 'home', scroll the list and tap Add Custom Label
Did you do that?

What is it about the instructions that doesn't work?
Note that if your contacts are stored in a work email account, you may not be able to use custom labels.

I understand where you're making the edits. But that doesn't tell me what account you're saying them to.
Go to Settings>Contacts>Accounts. What accounts are listed there?

No, I don't believe that's even possible.
I suspect the Outlook account, especially if it's a work account, is causing the problem. Try turning that one off and see if it works.
What account are your contacts in? iCloud? Gmail? Yahoo? Something else?
Does this happen with every contact? Or just some?
Are you sharing an Apple ID with someone? Or possibly sharing the account that holds the contacts?
IOS 17. There is NO ADD CUSTOM LABEL..and if you following instructions nice you can add a name as custom. And it stays there. lol. Can’t put it next to a phone number
When I add the Custom label and apply it to a label then press "Done", the new label appears for a second that returns to the old label.

What iPhone and IOS are you using?

settings>contacts>accounts contains:
iCloud, Outlook, Gmail, Yahoo
Should I add a separate one for the iPhone?
Custom label for phone number in contacts does not work for Apple phone.
