Command-s problem with Word for Mac

Recently, probably with either a Mac or Microsoft update, command-s saves sometimes and sometimes doesn't. Microsoft doesn't seem to have a solution.

On some documents, for now, file/"save as" seems to work ; I can't tell whether file/"save" works for them because the usual "saved to.." doesn't appear at top of document window.

With other documents, "command-s" works and "saved" at top shows.

Anyone know what is going on here? Are Microsoft and Apple haveing another one of those incompatibility wars?
