Does Removing your phone delete all of its data?

I got my phone stolen in Miami a couple of weeks ago. I am getting sketchy texts about how my phone is about to be sold on the black market with my information on it. The email messaging me says I need to "not erase" it and "reset" it so they can do a factory reset to protect my information. This seems like they are trying to get into my phone and steal my information. Has anyone else seen a scam like this, are they telling the truth?

It is a phishing scam. They are attempting to get you to respond and typically that involves logging into a site that appears to be an Apple site and by doing that, divulge your Apple ID and password.

If you had a passcode on your iPhone your data is very safe. You can also erase the phone using instructions in the following:

Use any internet browser and log into www.icloud.com/find
