Untrusted root certificate

In my settings. Under my google account under the outgoing mail server then advanced. The heading S/MIME. Two choices under that are sign and encrypt by default. Both of these choices lead me to see a untrusted apple root certificate. Can anyone please explain. I relate such things as being rooted having to do with spyware or hacking. Like maybe someone has installed something. On my phone without my knowledge or permission. Someone please help me understand could it be caused by anything like spyware or hacking?
