I recently purchased the ssd, 2tb. Purchased the phone jack/ lightning adapter and I don’t have enough juice to operate hard drive through a 20w wall wart? This I have read is the recipe for making this combo work. No dice. What do I do other than take this thing to the retail shop?

While Hard Disk Drives (HDD) are notoriously power hungry, SSD storage devices require much less power to operate.

However, an iPad with a Lightning port will still be unable to source adequate power to operate external storage devices. As such, unless your external storage has its own source of power, you must either use a powered USB hub and/or use an Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter- to which you must also connect your iPad Power Adapter. The Power Adapter must be rated at least 12W (2.4A @5V) - although a 20-30W Power Adapter is recommended.

To be recognised by iPadOS, the attached USB storage device must be formatted to FAT, FAT32, exFAT, APFS or HFS+ with a single partition. Microsoft NTFS and other proprietary device formatting are not supported.
