Here are the items from Fall 2023 you should be installing from Canon for this device:
These are on the Canon Pixma MP280 site. Click the Software and Drivers box. On the Please Select your OS Version selector, choose MacOS Monterey v12 and then download each of the non-optional bullets above. The MP Navigator will allow you to print and scan, if you don't want to use Apple's Image Capture.
You will need to install these, and then in System Preferences : Printers & Scanners : right-click on your MP280 entry in Printers and choose Reset Print System… That will remove the printers entry and then you re-add the printer and explicitly choose the new driver installation in the Use: portion of the Add Printers panel.
The Canon MP280 is not supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint technology and this device has been retired by Canon.

Thank you for your detailed reply, I have successfully installed the two drivers and software for the scanner but when I go into System Preferences : Printers & Scanners it is empty, with the message 'no printers are available'. When I click the + sign to add a printer that dialogue box is also empty.
There was a problem with the cable, I've now fixed that and the printer has shown up in the System Preferences. I've completed your earlier instructions and all now seems to be well. Many thanks for you help
You are welcome.
How is the printer connected to the Mac, and is the printer powered on before you attempt to re-add it? Reboot your Mac, and with the first sentence satisfied, try re-adding the printer.
