Mac Mail two email addresses on same domain?

Sonoma (same with earlier MacOSs) I can't set up multiple email addresses with the same domain in Apple Mail, whereas I have no problem with other email clients such as Airmail. This is really frustrating. I did once get it to work, but only by giving all accounts the same password. Even that didn't work the last time I tried, and I'm loath to do it anyway.

Why would I want multiple accounts on the same domain? I have a one-man business and it is convenient to have, say, sales@abusiness.com coming into one mailbox and publicity@abusiness.com come into another. And having different passwords means that if one account is compromised, the others may not be.

Do I really have to switch to a third-party email client?

When you say "it won't let me", I suppose that some error appears. What is the error, exactly?

If you can receive mail but not send, it points to an issue with the SMTP settings... it could be the server address is wrong, or something. Usually, the SMTP server name starts with smtp, so

if the pop server is pop.mydomain.com, the smtp server would be smtp.mydomain.com, but it is not necessarily this way. I suppose you have these correctly set, but of course only you can check.

Another thing is encryption, like using SSL or not, and the proper port for each service.

I don't know why this might happen to you. I have more than one icloud address, and more than one gmail address configured for use with Mail in my mac, and never had a problem with that.

What exactly happens when you try to add an account?

Presumably, you go to System Settings->Internet Accounts, click "Add Account...", and get this:

Then you click "Add Other Account..." and what happens?

Can you post some screenshots (obscuring any private details like the actual account names, of course)?

Thanks. I have no problem setting up the accounts and the IMAP or POP side of things works but if I try to reply on these accounts, Mail won't let me. Currently, I'm either replying using a different account or using the correct account on Airmail. Actually, I'm tempted to switch to Airmail anyway, as I like the support for sending HTML emails.

It does point to a problem with the SMTP settings but they are correct. I can assure you that I know how to set email settings. I've been doing it for at least 40 years. It says it cannot send the message and 'This message could not be sent because your account does not have a preferred outgoing mail server. Select an outgoing mail server from the list below.' This is simply untrue. The outgoing server is set, but if I then reselect the same account it comes up with the same message, so the only way I can reply is by using a a different account. The server settings (I store all of them in a password manager) are the are the same as the ones used in Airmail and on my Android phone (using both the Gmail app and Edison Software's Email app) and my two Linux laptops (using Thunderbird). In other words, Airmail, Gmail, the Edison app and Thunderbird all work and Apple Mail doesn't. I have to admit that I don't have all the accounts on other devices, but I have at least the one same gmail account on each (and 2 gmail accounts on one Linux machine, an early MacBook Air) and Apple Mail is the only one where it doesn't work – and I have the same problem with non-gmail accounts with more than one account on the same domain.
