Language change shortcut is extremely annoying

Dear whoever can help,

I have been bugged by this issue for almost 2 years now and I couldn't help but sending this complaint. I really wish that Apple would take the issue seriously as I'm sure that many of your loyal users are bugged by it too.

It's very annoying that you switched the language change shortcut to the fn key because this made many things go wrong and it's annoying on a frequent basis. First of all, you cannot simply break your users' conventions. I've been accustomed to use the previous cmnd+space shortcut for almost 10 years. Although it might seems as a simple issue, it actually feels very annoying to have to get used to a new one.

You might think that changing the settings to what I'm accustomed to is the solution, but guess what, it's not! I tried to do that, and it's been giving me a lag (or even frequent ignoring) whenever I use it. It is extremely annoying that I started to lose trust in the whole machine because you simply expect such small details to work easily rather than being a constant bug.

I even went to the Apple store to complaint about the issue, and all that the "Genius" bar dude could advice is to format my Mac and reinstall. What a super efficient tip. But, guess what, I also did that, and it seemed to work fine for a while. But, after thinking that my life is back to normal, the issue came back again when I updated my OS.

With the new update, it also started to change language for me randomly when pressing the fn key, which I intend to use with the backspace sometimes to delete the following letter. When I asked it to disable the fn key for language change, the fn+backspace function doesn't work any more. And I still have the language change issue. It's super annoying.

Sorry for the long post, but this probably mainly about how a silly unnecessary change can mean a constant bug for your users. I doubt anyone would be able to help. But hope that Apple can do something in future updates to overcome this super annoying issue.

You can easily fix this yourself, there is nothing Apple needs to do here. The Genius bar dude you saw does not seem to have any clue about how this part of MacOS works..

Go to system preferences > keyboard > keyboard and find the place where you choose what Fn/Globe does and change it to do something else.

Then go to system preferences > keyboard > shortcuts and check the box for changing input sources. The default shortcut is normally Control Space. It was Command Space years ago but Apple changed so it would not conflict with the shortcut for Spotlight.

If it is set to Control Space and you still want to have Command Space, turn off the shortcut for Spotlight and then if necessary change the one for switching input sources to Command Space.

Read these Apple instructions:

Write in another language on your Mac - Apple Support

Set a keyboard shortcut to switch input sources on Mac - Apple Support

(If you are not still in Monterey, change the OS version on those pages to match what you are running)

Let us know if you can get it the way you want. If any problems, just ask here again.
