Since iOS 17.0.3, incoming phone calls or texts no longer are identified as coming from names in the Contacts list. Thus it is n longer possible to identify scam calls or texts easily.
This is a severe regression or bug and degrades the user experience immensely. I am still on an iPhone XS but hear that the problem also exists on more recent iPhones.
Are other people experiencing this too?

All contacts that should be identified are present in the Contacts database. Also, Settings>Phone>Dial Assist only seems to determine the correct international dial code. It has always been set but I don't see how it could affect the identification of a caller who is in the Contacts list. Switching it off does not affect the issue.

Usually that means that something is messed up in your contacts. If you open contacts to you see the entries that are not appearing in the phone or text apps? If they are missing you will have to fix that.
If all of your contacts are still there go to Settings/Phone and try changing the setting for Dial Assist.
Not yet. I downloaded it but then saw some posts about it that caused me to wait a week or two before installing.
i did solve my problem though. There were two frequent contacts that disappeared from my contacts list after more close inspection. I had to go back 4 weeks to find them in the iCloud backup. After restoring the contacts from that backup, they now appear. I have of course lost updates since then but that’s an easier problem to deal with.

No, it is not a “severe regression or bug”, it is something not working on YOUR PHONE, not hundreds of millions of other iPhones.
Why do people assume that any problem they have must be a bug?
