Cannot remap Function keys (MBP 13 Ventura)

Hopefully you can all see the problem in the photo.

I'm just looking to create a working keyboard shortcut for display brightness, since the operation no longer seems to show up on my Touch Bar (which has always been pretty useless to me, except for that specific operation). It used to show up when I had my display brightness turned completely down to a black screen, then hit a key when I needed to turn it back up again.

.

Regardless. First, there are no F14 and F15 function keys. I tried remapping the actual existing function keys in another part of System Settings, but double clicking in the assignment list, as prompted, does *nothing.*

Anyone know how to do this in Ventura?

Do you mean you have the Touch Bar set to "Expand Control Strip?"

I did indeed have the Touch Bar set to "Expand Control Strip." Two things I should have made clear:

Something is up with my Touch Bar, so it does not always turn on when touched (go figure), so I can't actually always access the Control Strip.

I actually prefer the slider, not the multi-touch brighten/darken function of the function keys. So I really was not interested in the function keys ultimately. I wrote my question because the slider had disappeared, so the function key operation was my alternative resort.

I think Ventura reset my Touch Bar in some way, so my customizations disappeared. I now have the Touch Bar set to Quick Actions, and added the Brightness function, so I now have my slider back!

The slider is available in non-expanded control-strip:

If I want to use the slider, I can just tap the brightness icon above:

Perhaps for your use case it may be more helpful to have the touch bar show the control strip, and make Fn key show function keys.

All these options can be set in System Settings->Keyboard->Touch Bar Settings. I suggest you experiment to find the combination that works best for you.

Thanks - in fact, I had customized the Touch Bar when I first got this MBP. That's how I was able to see it on the Control Strip in the first place. It may have reset to default when I upgraded to Ventura. Of course it's always right after I post that I find the solution, after further digging around. All is well. Thanks for your replies!
