MacBook Air Late 2014 Cannot Update

Hi, I have the MacBook Air (from Late 2014), it is currently using MacOS High Sierra. I need to update it in order to download software but in the updates section my computer is telling met that "there are no updates available". I have read that this computer can be updated to macOS 11 (Big Sur), however when I go to install these I am being told I do not have enough space for them. Has anyone else encountered this product? Is my computer just too old to keep up with Apple's ever changing systems? Is it time I bought a new laptop? :-(

There is no such thing as a Late 2014 MacBook Air. See: Identify your MacBook Air model - Apple Support

An early 2014 MacBook Air can be upgraded to the latest version of Big Sur macOS 11 but no later. See: How to download and install macOS - Apple Support
