Horizontal black screen/glitch that fades when switching on MacBook Pro

I own a MacBook Pro 13-inch 2017, i5 2.3 GHz. For some time when I switch it on I am welcomed by almost an entirely black screen with only the top tool bar visible. The black screen slowly 'fades' downwards after about 30 minutes or so, sometime faster if I keep pressing things on the tool bar. Eventually when the black screen glitches everything is visible once again and I can login. A 1cm horizontal black line/glitch remains at the top of the screen which flashes from time to time - not much bother once it's at this stage as line is not that visible.

Any ideas as to what this could be and how to fix it?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 12.2

Seems like a hardware fault...

Horizontal would point to GPU /screen buffer / or display-generator

Do you see the same fault on an external monitor plugged in... this would be telling

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment
