Horizontal black screen/glitch that fades when switching on MacBook Pro

The black screen slowly 'fades' downwards after about 30 minutes or so, sometime faster if I keep pressing things on the tool bar. Seems like a hardware fault...

Horizontal would point to GPU /screen buffer / or display-generator

Do you see the same fault on an external monitor plugged in... this would be telling
