Your screenshot can’t be saved… Unable to capture window image

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

It happens when I try to take a screenshot of a dialog, meaning I press the cmd-shift-4 combination then spacebar then tap trackpad. I used to be able to do it then at some point years ago it stopped working.

MacBook Pro 14″, macOS 14.1

not worth taking the time to reboot and gamble for a maybe solution. So I won't do anything.

booting into safe mode takes like 45 seconds on most machines. and wether or not booting into safe mode works, you can just reboot your Mac normally. and you could set up an additional user in a few minutes. you would not waste "hours" trying those two things, and it could help us get pointed in the right direction.

At this point it would be preferable to disable the trackpad tap that triggers the Window screenshot feature.

if you think it may be a trackpad issue, then, yes, disabling that feature could work.

Okay so here is a discussion where 1,226 people say "Me Too": "Your screenshot can't be saved" 'You do… - Apple Community It was posted in 2013 so Apple should have had time to fix it. And I have other annoying bugs that have plagued my Mac for years, like TextEdit randomly losing the ability to drag selected text. So when I bought this new Macbook Pro last year I decided to fix these problems once and for all, I started from scratch rebuilding all my preferences from default. No Library files were copied from my old userfolder. And wouldn't you know it, the same bugs eventually appeared. So all I can assume is that these minor bugs are part of the OS. I used to submit bug reports but after years the bugs weren't fixed so I quit reporting them. Sorry for being such a jerk but I do love my Macbook Pro and I just accept that the OS isn't perfect.

I found it! Here is me trying to fix the TextEdit dragging problem I asked 2 years ago, when I had my old Intel Macbook: Text-Edit and other apps lose ability to … - Apple Community

And I am still dealing with this problem, no hope in sight.

Under no circumstances will "Selected Window" be saved, no matter how I get there. So I think it is not about the saving, more likely the window handler. The reason I like to do it is that it makes a nice transparent border around the screenshot, whereas drag-select doesn't.

I'm not going to boot up in safe mode or create a new user account just for this one stupid failing. In fact the internet is full of people complaining about this problem some going back to 2018. If the method has been deprecated Apple should just remove it.

No, it is not deprecated. It is working in Sonoma just as it always has.

It has been failing for you, but even if you find a hundred people saying they have this, it is a very small number compared to many millions of mac users. If this were a common problem I am sure we’d have heard about it, and loudly.

You are the one who came here with an issue. We are all users like you, trying to help. If you can’t be bothered to troubleshoot the problem then why ask in the first place?

The things I asked were not difficult. If you happened to find that it worked in Safe Mode (which it probably would), then we’d know for sure that some third party software is involved.

for most of us, it's not broken. so apple does not need to fix it.

I will quote Luis Sequeira1: "It is working in Sonoma just as it always has. but since you are convinced it is apple's problem, and you steadfastly REFUSE to do any trouble-shooting, there's not really anything that anyone here can do to help you with this.
