Taking raw photos in ios 17 ends up with great images but if I click on Edit button, it results (without me editing anything) in different editing which doesn’t seem good or pleasing to eye. I assume the build in editing tool doesn’t support raw files yet?

What you're seeing there is the jpeg preview built in to every raw file. In other words, the phone processes the raw and stores a preview so you can see what the image would look like if you shot jpeg.

That's the actual raw, the unprocessed image.
This is true of all devices and cameras that shoot raw.
So meaning the pretty after shot preview is actually jpg?
also if I try editing the raw images in the ios built in editor they don’t look good vs if I tried in lightroom so I guess the built in tool doesn’t deal with raw well
Or... you're not as adept with it as you are with LR. :)
But LR is a lot more powerful anyway.
