Suddenly Can't sign in to iMessage on MacBook Pro 2015 (Monterey)

I've reset my password 2x already & still not working. Says "unknown error occurred". Called support and shared my phone screen and used camera pointed at MBP screen and was told it's my operating system. I updated to Monterey about 2 months ago and it's been working fine until this morning.

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.7

This worked years ago for me but I cannot guarantee it will still work now. So please ensure you have a backup!


What worked for me:


  • Log out of iCloud
  • Go to ~/Library/Application Support/iCloud/Accounts/
  • and delete (or copy to folder on Desktop) the files in this folder
  • Log back into iCloud (may possibly need a reboot first)
  • Account will be set up again from scratch.
