Erratic timer notification in AiPods

I just updated my iPhone 12 mini to iOS 17.1.1, and I'm getting erratic timer notifications in my AirPods (second generation) when the timer finishes.

It seems like a few of the tones work--sometimes--including Daybreak and Kettle. But I'd say 90% of the time, I get nothing, so if my timer finishes and my phone is in a different room, I miss the notification. Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions, if so?

I contacted apple support about it, and they didn't seem to have any familiarity with the issue--and had me reset my phone, which was a kind of drastic step that didn't solve the problem.
