Has anyone successfully gotten WebDAV to work properly in MacOS (either Sonoma or Monterey?)

From what I can tell, using Finder to try and mount a connection to a WebDAV (webdisk or other) server is barely functional. I have an old 2015 Intel mbp on Monterey and a new M3 Pro mpb on Sonoma 14.1.1, and both have the same issue.

When connecting to the WebDAV server, either using SSL or non-encrypted port, it usually does the following:

1) acts like it's connecting but then doesn't show mounted drive.

2) after several attempts, it will eventually show the mounted connection and display the files located there.

3) I can sometimes read those files, and sometimes delete them.

If I try to save or replace a file to the mounted location, it will either error out on permissions or lose connection to the drive altogether and not be able to see it anymore.

The only place I can find WebDAV instructions are here, but they are brief.

Connect to or disconnect from a WebDAV server on Mac - Apple Support

I attempted to chat with apple support today, but it was clear the person's first language was not English and they had a hard time understanding that I was trying to open a ticket with support. It appears the old way of entering a support ticket via email or a portal is gone.

If anyone has gotten this figured out, i'd be grateful for instructions. It works flawlessly with windows 10 on my work machine.

Always has been.

That's a tough one. I was working on an app a decade ago and discovered major bugs in Apple's WebDAV driver. I don't know if they were ever fixed. At the time Apple flat out told me that they wouldn't be fixed. I cut my losses and moved on. Apple also recommended that I use SMB instead, but that was significantly more difficult. A few years later I encountered a number of SMB bugs while using a very well-supported SMB network.

These day, I don't recommend using any traditional file server with a Mac. For one thing, you open yourself up to ransomware attacks. Those don't need any kind of security exploits. All it needs is a password, and those can be easily socially engineered. Once you have the password, any operating system will give you full access to the network and all your files are gone.

I recommend information management systems like Atlassian and accessing files via a web browser.

@etresoft that's very helpful- thank you.

i'm trying to use webdisk functionality on my personal website as limited cloud storage to avoid using google drive/icloud/onedrive/dropbox.

i have a single webdisk account set up on my domain for this purpose. whatever solution i use needs to work cross platform and ideally be capable of mounting as a drive. but looks like i need to look to something besides webdav if it is to work w mac. thank you again for the info!

What's wrong with iCloud?

You can use SMB. That's relatively easy to setup on your own. It's totally cross platform. Just be conscious of macOS limitations. Treat it like FTP or something. Don't try to directly open a file on the server. Try hard to avoid using Finder on the server. If you need to edit a file, copy it to your local drive, make your changes, then copy it back to the server.

And if it's just you, you can probably ignore all of that advice and just use it as you might be normally inclined. Multiple users is normally what causes problems. The Finder is a beast. If you try to open a big folder full of images, you can expect that Finder will lock up on a regular basis. You can try to force quit Finder or restart the computer. I recommend keeping backups for any files that you regularly open on the server. You should expect corrupt files.
