mkv file runs on Ubuntu, but not macOS

The mkv file runs on Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS program: Video, but not on macOS High Sierra Version 10.13.6 program: VLC media player Version 2.0.6 Twoflower (Intel 64bit)?

Error:

No suitable decoder module

VLC does not support the audio or video format "undf".

Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.

I also converted the mkv file to mp4 using command $ ffmpeg -i file.mkv -codec copy file.mp4.

However, same issue, runs on Ubuntu's Video player, but Mac running on QuickTime Player Version 10.4 (928.13) shows error:

The document "file.mp4" could not be opened.

The file isn't compatible with QuickTime Player.

I can't upgrade macOS due to my Mac Mini hardware limitations, so not sure if the latest VLC would work on this version of macOS or run the mkv file.

I don't think I corrupted the mkv file as I transferred the mkv file using command $ rsync -ahPvz file.mkv user@destination:~Desktop.
