Need to store Music on my Iphone, not in the cloud

I have 6200 files of music and I have a large storage in my Iphone. I have no cell coverage and my internet coverage is broadband. Therefore, I need a solution to both store and play music on my iphone.

I have Itunes of course, but have no way to connect files stored locally that I am aware of. Drag and Drop does not work. I have no subscription nor do I want one to apple music, nor Icloud.

Believe it or not, Cell and High speed internet or NOT coming to a BC community near you any time soon. We were told by Rogers in 1993, it would be just around the corner. So the idea of just waiting,, does not appeal, and my Ipod which allowed synced music is almost dead. I have my music all fixed and loaded in Itunes with the ID tags and everything all fixed. So all dressed up and no place to go.

I see that your tag line says "Windows 10" – suggesting that you are using a Windows PC, not a Mac. In that case, you would use iTunes for Windows to load music onto your iPhone.

I'm not sure if the versions of iTunes at the above sites are new enough to manage iPhones running iOS 17. For that, you may need to go through a download link on one of the iPhone-15-family Technical Specifications pages. (The iPhone-15-family pages refer to a newer version of iTunes for Windows.)

Syncing to a Mac or PC requires:

    • macOS Catalina 10.15 or later using the Finder
    • macOS High Sierra 10.13 through macOS Mojave 10.14.6 using iTunes 12.8 or later
    • Windows 10 or later using iTunes 12.12.10 or later (free download from apple.com/itunes/download)

I don't remember having to set my iPhone and Mac to trust each other. Just making the wired connection, using USB (and the Lightning-to-USB cable that came with my iPhone), while I was

  • Running iTunes (when the Mac in question was running something before Catalina), or
  • Running Music (when the Mac in question was running Catalina or later)

At that point, it's possible that some dialog popped up on the iPhone or the Mac asking if I trusted the other one, and I just told it "Yes". Or that the Mac prompted me to install some patch to iTunes, and I said "Yes".

The album art is a pain in the touche.

I've found that with a lot of CDs, the Get Album Art function doesn't work at all – or returns the wrong album art. For some CDs, I resorted to scanning in the booklet covers, or taking pictures of the covers with my iPhone!

So if I have to fix something, I have to do it on the Windows 10 computer, and then copy it to the Windows 11 computer. This is important as the makers of the CD's etc have different requirements to set their tags. They never set the disc number, some use compilations instead, which causes storage location issues, and some give a bonus cd, but don't tag it the same way. In fact there are a number of different issues you can correct to create a perfectly formed library, if you can get access to the ID Tag tab to fix them.

I'm not familiar with iTunes for Windows. Are you saying that the only way to set tags is through a Windows 10 or 11 interface, rather than through a "Get Info"-style dialog within the iTunes application itself?

Full Stop. First sentence. To sync your files you need Apple Music which is stored on the Cloud. A person would have obtain and pay for a subscription that one could not use since one is OFF the grid so to speak

Depends on what type of syncing you are talking about.

The original sync was from a Mac's iTunes Library, to an iPod. That type of syncing is still around, and is one way to load music from your own CDs onto an {iPhone / iPad / iPod}.

  • On Macs running macOS Catalina (10.15) or later, iTunes went away, replaced by separate applications. So you would use the Music app to import songs, and Finder to load them onto the iPhone.
  • On Windows PCs, and on Macs running operating systems prior to Catalina, you would still use iTunes.

There are other types of syncing that are cloud-based, like

  • iTunes Match
  • Sync Library / Apple Music subscription

but it sounds like those are not what the OP wants.

The Sync Library feature is one particular kind of syncing. It does require a subscription of some sort (maybe to Apple Music, maybe to iTunes Match).

It is not the only form of syncing.

It's also one that I prefer not to use. In the early days, there were reports of iTunes Match accidentally destroying people's carefully-built-up libraries of music from their own CDs, by making "matches" between different songs - and "upgrading" the iTunes Library to contain copies of the wrong song from Apple's servers.

The other type of syncing involves connecting the iPhone to a Mac or PC, and using

  • The Mac Finder to load the iPhone with music from the Mac's Music Library (macOS Catalina or later)
  • iTunes to load the iPhone with music from a Mac or PC's iTunes Library (macOS Mojave or earlier; Windows)

This is a mostly one-way synchronization that overwrites the iPhone's music library with whatever you've selected to transfer from the {iTunes/Music} library of the Mac or PC. You must connect the iPhone to the Mac or PC every time you want to change the selection. But it does not require the Internet or a subscription of any kind.

Look I really would like to solve this. I had my Iphone phone on home share and can see the PC Library. It will not allow me to transfer files this way. So if you can walk me how to overcome this difficulty on my Iphone screen, I would be in to having a go of this.

There are features that let you share an {iTunes/Music} Library so that you can play it from another device, e.g., from an Apple TV set-top box connected to your home stereo/theater system.

Those aren't the ones that you would use for loading music from Mac or PC onto an iPhone.

If no subscription is required, then why does my Apple IPhone 14 say it requires an Apple Music suscription for the option to authorize Sync to Iphone to even show up. This is also shown on the UTube, but the person speaking does not say that a subcription is required. It is only the Iphone itself that states this.

The one-way synchronization is perfect. So do I need to set my phone to trust the computer and accept the data? This would be usual, but I am not sure how I can do that. The last time I did this to the Ipod in 2015, this is how I did it, and I set up my computer Itunes. This time, i seemed to have trouble even telling I tunes that I wanted it to use the current computer as the library I was syncing from. It was looking for the computer I used in 2015, although that was long gone. I was thinking that was the issue with configuration the from and to, and I don't see anyplace to set those parameters. I have my computer and phone connected with USB so that should not be a problem, although with Iphones, I know you have to accept the hand shake, but again, I can't figure out how.

There are other changes with Itunes as well that are not welcomed. When I copied my itunes libarary to a stick, I had major duplications, even though I had none in Itunes until I started the copy. By the time my files were one the stock, several of the earlier set had duplicated back. I then had to go throuigh and look at the stick and fix the stick and use it to refix my itunes to remove the duplicates. The album art is a pain in the touche. I have one album that stubbornly refuses to use the art in the Windows 11 computer that I loaded the stick onto, thinking if I could not sync the library, I would copy and recreate to a computer we use as a TV up at the lake, to use it as a stereo, and then just connect a wireless speaker. However, we prefer to have the Iphone as we can attach our bose headphones to listen as my husband is up early, and I am up late. The computer doesn't work for that, as it is set in place.

Also, I noted that you have an amazing amount of access to the Windows ID Tags in Windows 10 Pro, but only access to the Details tag and you cannot add parameters there.

So if anyone could tell me how to set those parameters for a one off event, I would be very grateful. Betty

Well, over the years, the Windows ID Tags were unavailable through Home versions. I purchased a 3rd party tagging software in 2015 to do this. However, I had replaced all my OS on all my home equipment to Windows 10 Pro. When that happened, you can now see several tabs if you right clip properties, including Details, which is available on Itunes, (But you can't add columns), and 2ndly ID Tag Tab, which has a massive choice of additional columns available. So for instance, for some strange reason, my Bob Dylan Album which has 2 discs has all the song info in Chinese. So when I went into the Import CD, I stopped at the Add CD Info, and I was able to add the correct info in a number of columns, but I could not add columns, like Disc. After I imported it, I went to the Windows Explorer view, right clicked on properties, and added disc where I added 1/2 or 2/2, and I added Album Artist, and added Bob Dylan. Now Bob Dylan is quite often the song artist, but sometimes, it is two or three people. If you don't add an Album Artist - ie Bob Dylan, Itunes will separate the storage of each song according to the artists for each song. So an album which is a mix of artists, if you don't add an Album Artist named for example "Various Artists", then each song will have a separate storage which is a consolidation of the Album name and Artist. So some of the older discs with 24 old songs from the 50's, you could never put it back together again. One of the issues with this is that because you cannot add a column to CD Info, you may have to stop after you import it, find all the pieces and individually add Album Artist, and the Info and then it will repopulate, pulling them back together into one spot. But Itunes may not delete the original songs stored individually, so you end up with duplicates unless you go back and look, find and delete them from the library, and when they ask delete or keep, you must say delete on the original one, and then hopefully that copy will disappear. It is an arduous long process. I had 4900 sons and I had already cleaned a lot back in 2015. The other thing is that you must convert from wave or whatever other format over to Apple Lossless, before you clean, as there is no way to transfer those additional columns, on the convert. The information just disappears, and you have to go back into the Windows Explorer version and re-add the columns and data again. The other thing with the artwork, you can only use PNG and JPG. You must use some sort of image software to resize to 1400 x 1400, and then resize the data by compressing it down to about 40 or less KB. Then you can attach it easily, every time. I stored each of these as "AlbumArt_Artist_Album_Name, and stored them in the Custom Artwork folder in Itunes. When you add the Albumn Art, you can search alphabetically then and easily attach them. If you can see it in the directory, the data is small enough. If you can't, the data is too big. I used Microsoft Images from Microsoft Office 2010.

The other thing is I was successful with my sync, although I would not call it that. Firstly, I became aware over the last years I had several computers between the 2015 computer and the 2 I am using now. Each used the same ID. That is bad. So I went into my current computers and renamed them to something very specific like DESKTOP-ZbookB, and DESKTOP-SurfaceB.

The next thing, is that this is achieved through the Home sharing Windows. As soon as I had renamed my computers, up popped a button that asked if I wanted to sync my files to the Iphone which I had attached. I said yes, and under it, there was another button that said to reset my sync history, and I said yes. As soon as I did that, I was able to "what they called transfer" but was actually a copy of the library over to the Iphone. It look about an hour and my original library was untouched, and my phone library has all of the art and everything on it.

So be cautious of the words used. If you have to move your sync button over on your phone to yes, then you will be in a world of hurt when it scrambles your eggs. However, if you use your Home sharing window to achieve this, it is a piece of art. I believe my conversion of every single piece of music to Apple Lossless prevented Apple App from having to make a decision of what to do with it. I think that is why sometime I ended up with dups, as it look the MP3 and created an MP 4 file and left both behind, after I had left it at night. Then I had to go look for the dups again. But once I had completed the entire library conversion, I left nothing to chance.

Hope this helps some other poor sod. I have 256 memory, and 5000 sons were achieved in this format, and I think there was still room left over.
