AppleCare+ for child's device

I am thinking of buying an iPhone for my 12 year old son and want to protect it with AppleCare+ but I have read the Ts & Cs and they say the policy can only be purchased by an adult.

I would want my son to use the device with his own iCloud account (not mine) so I'm guessing I need to go to a 3rd party insurer unless anyone has successfully claimed for a child/minor under AppleCare+ ?

Is it possible to add AppleCare without activating a device? Hello, I purchased an iPhone 16e from my carrier on a promotion. I am going to use it as a gift for my son’s birthday in the fall and keep it in the box until then. I am wondering if it is possible to purchase AppleCare for a device that is still inbox and not activated. I tried to purchase AppleCare via the Apple support app and it said that it could not determine eligibility because the device is not active. But this is my son’s first phone, and I would like to give him the opportunity to open it up himself as I have always enjoyed the experience. The problem is his birthday is beyond the 60 day mark for adding AppleCare. I would like to just purchase a year close to the end of the 60 day window to get the most out of the year, but do not want to open the box until my son’s birthday. Both the Apple support app and the website are not allowing me to purchase AppleCare. Do I have to open the phone and turn it on in order to purchase AppleCare? Or is there a way around this? thank you for your time.

rafsanchez, You could ask Apple Care Support Line on the best way to proceed for your child's device.
