Apple Support's online article: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

says:

"Firmware updates are delivered periodically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac".

Seems your AirPods firmware updates automatically via a Mac or Apple device

that is updated to the latest Mac OS or iOS software. NB: AirPods update quite quickly using a Mac.

Tip: You may need to leave AirPods connected to power overnight

with an iPhone (using iOS 17 or later) connected to wi-fi close by.

If you do not have a computer or device with up-to-date software, you can ask Apple for help:

You may want to make a reservation at an Apple Store: Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple
