Unable to resolve kernel panic - due to failed back up to external drive?

My mac started experiencing Kernel Panic in the last few months. At first it was occasional, but has only increased in frequency and at times I am unable to start at all, or only in safe mode. I had a time machine backup that never completed on an old random disk that I wondered if it could have been the problem...and since erased and repaired that disk and deleted it. I bought a new disk for my TM backup.

Otherwise I have tried:

Repairing/running first aid on all external disks and the Macintosh HD disks and volumes

Reinstalling MacOS (2 times) and updating software

Removing any apps that would open upon start up

I ran diagnostics and it said there was a problem with a storage device. My most recent crash report sites AppleCameraAssistant and mentions a "read only portion of libraries" which leads me to think my old disk backup that failed may still be the issue as the disk turned "read only" thus not completing the back up.

Is there anything else I can do to try and resolve this issue? How can I completely wipe my system of the old disk/backup that failed if it may be the issue?

Thanks in advance for any help -- my knowledge with tech is slim so please bear with me.

If the diagnostics reported an issue with the drive, then you will need to have the Mac repaired.

FYI, it is always a good idea to provide the exact model Mac when asking for assistance and version of macOS involved.
