IOS 17.1.1 Touch screen unresponsive

This occurred several times on my iPhone 13 mini over the last few months with IOS 16, but is worse after I installed IOS 17.1.1 a day ago. It usually starts with the Messages app. It fails to register the last few characters I typed. I try to swipe the app upward to close it but swiping does not work, it’s stuck on the app screen. It moves a little, it knows I touched the screen. I can take a screen shot with the VOLUP/SIDE buttons, but not leave the app. I know the phone is alive and awake.

Trying to restart the phone with VOLUP/SIDE buttons, I cannot swipe POWER OFF to the right. The touch screen is almost unresponsive, the POWER OFF slider moves slightly, but not enough to work. With IOS 16 if I kept trying I was eventually able to clear the app, then other open apps would not clear, but I could power off after many attempts.

With IOS 17 the touch screen is completely unusable. I cannot recover without using force restart VOLUP/VOLDOWN/hold SIDE several seconds until it drops power.

This issue has rendered my iPhone 13 unusable twice this morning. Continually force restarting my phone is not a long-term solution. Is this a known issue with iPhone 13, IOS 16, IOS 17?

Hi,

This would be handled as a software issue vs a hardware issue. If you are already updated to the latest iOS and still experiencing the issue, the next step would be to reinstall iOS using a Mac or PC. This restores your iPhone to factory settings, meaning it erases your iPhone, and also removes the currently installed iOS and reinstalls it. This will always resolve all software issues, including yours.

Before reinstalling iOS, first try to confirm the following:

  1. Make sure you have sufficient device storage available in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If your iPhone storage is almost full, various performance issues can occur.
  2. If you use any third-party keyboard apps or custom fonts, delete them and then confirm if the issue still occurs. settings > general > keyboard or settings > general > fonts.

For instructions on how to reinstall iOS using a Mac or PC, use Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. Make sure you backup your iPhone prior to restoring it.

Hope this helps.

As I mentioned, force restart is not an acceptable long-term solution to this issue. It's a recovery method. I can no longer rely on my iPhone 13 for many things like paying for retail purchases, boarding public transport etc. If this issue is not fixed very quickly I'll have to buy another phone, not an iPhone.

And what did Apple support say when you contacted them as outlined in the link I provided?

It’s not fixed. It happened again, 9 days after the electronics in the phone were replaced under warranty.

I was editing a file in the Notes app, pocketed the phone for 2 minutes, then the space key was not working. I could type in characters, and backspace through them, but not add a space. I could not swipe the app upwards, or leave it. Volume up/ side buttons gave me the power off slide, but it did not work either. I had to force restart the phone.

Is this a known problem in IOS16 or 17? I’m on 17.1.2.

I would happily upgrade IOS and restore from a Mac local backup. But, this issue has occurred through several months of IOS 16 recent updates, at IOS 17.1.1 (seemingly worse) and my phone was returned last week from its rear board replacement by Apple with IOS 17.1.2, and restored from an iCloud backup.

I have a support appointment at the Apple Store tomorrow.
