Numbers and Months in the Year

How can I type Jan instead of January. I tried format... no option; I tried options... no option. This should be simple, but it's not.

Works here. I type jan into a cell and it turns it into January. It works without requiring the cell to be formatted. If the cell is pre-formatted as date & time it will convert jan into the specific date&time format of the cell.

Is your computer set to a region/language where January is not a month name? What region and language are you using?

If you want just Jan to appear instead of January then you can first explicitly format the cell(s) as Text.

Or you can type 'Jan (i.e. an apostrophe first, which will disappear after you enter the value).

Explicitly telling Numbers that you mean Text will prevent it from guessing that you mean Date-Time and substituting the entire name for the month abbreviation.
