I'm attempting to download and install updates for Safari and Ventura 13.5 with the ultimate intention of updating to Sonoma. Nothing will download. I get a tiny blue sliver on the prog bar but after hours of waiting, nothing happens. I have over 240GB of free space, I have no other apps running (that I know of), I have a very strong wifi connection, and I'm connected to power.

Thanks for the fast response. Having been an Apple Mac user since 1986, and owned about 40 Macs, I have the basics down. However, sometimes I forget the oldest trick in the book: Shut down and restart. Works (almost) every time!
Apple menu -> About This Mac -> Software Update will help you get up to 13.6.2.
If you want to upgrade to Sonoma, go to the Mac App Store and install it.
Before you do, backup your data, read other possible pitfalls you may run into:

Troubleshooting Stalled Update:
Few Thoughts:
Sometimes when changes are made to the system(i.e. updates), system configurations (i.e. for Power) become manipulated, technically. So, reset the SMC and NVRAM. Use a different external keyboard, if available option. (applies to Intel-Baced Macs Only).
Ethernet will allow for a reliable connection.
Try installing via a USB Bootable Installer. Use a separate Mac to create one of these - use a 16GB flash drive. It is create in Terminal, with the correct drivers.

I too have owned over 20+ macs and am very fluent in the OS
BUT I too have the same issues with not being able to download updates and some Apps
I've done all the restarts, and resets, etc. still can't download
